Dear Well-Meaning Liberals Who Keep Calling the Post Office “Socialism”

You aren’t accomplishing what you think you are.

Let me say this as kindly and clearly as I can:

That word doesn’t mean what you think it means… or rather you aren’t communicating what you think you are.

Every time you call libraries, fire departments, or public schools “socialism,” somewhere out there, a voter whose family fled an actual socialist regime clenches their jaw and quietly decides they just can’t vote your way.

And it ain’t because they’re confused. It’s because they remember.

To them, “socialism” doesn’t mean free Wi-Fi at the DMV. It means the government owned everything. It means one-party rule, food lines, secret police, and the kind of slogans that sound real inspiring right up until you realize you’re not allowed to disagree with ’em.

You can argue, “But that was communism!”… uh yeah, that too. But those regimes? They explicitly called themselves “socialist.” In the Marxist-Leninist tradition embraced by those regimes, socialism was understood as a transitional phase on the way to communism: the state would take control of economic production and then, at least in theory, eventually wither away. In practice, it just dug in deeper.

That ain’t propaganda. That’s several chapters out of the twentieth century, filled with broken economies, vanished dissidents, and regimes that were literally “socialist” while crushing anyone who disagreed.

Now, do we all benefit from public goods? Absolutely. Roads, schools, Medicare, Social Security—these are government services in a mixed economy, not a sneak preview of state-run everything. Having a fire department doesn’t mean we’re one step away from forced collectivization.

But when you blur that line—when you lump in a community garden with central planning—folks who’ve lived through it start to wonder if you’re either naïve or hoping the rest of us are.

And I promise you this: lots of folks won’t be voting for a candidate who waxes poetic about the kind of regime their grandparents risked everything to escape. And they sure as hell aren’t signing up for someone who acts like the rest of us are too dumb to notice that, yes, there are still folks on the left who think a state-run economy sounds just fine—so long as they’re the ones in charge.

Gee, I wonder how that will go…

So here’s a little free campaign advice, y’all:

Stop trying to reclaim the word “socialism.” You don’t need it to defend public programs. You’re picking the wrong fight, on the wrong hill, with the wrong word—and it’s costing you more than it’s winning.

If your goal is to help people, then help people.

If your goal is to win elections, quit scaring off the folks who know damn well what the stakes are.

They’re not stupid. They’re not overreacting.

They just know history better than your social media feed does.
